Henry Hartman once said, “Success always comes when preparation meets opportunity,” and last week students at The University of Akron prepared themselves for opportunities within the College of Arts and Sciences.

On Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) liaisons for STEM and CAS students met with students for resume reviews, Career Fair prep, and quick tips.

While there was a line out the door of students waiting to be seen, Jennifer Pirtz and Katherine Creamer, who both work at the Career Center, were able to meet with only 12 students during this time frame.

The day was an overall success, both Pirtz and Creamer a were very pleased with how many students they were able to assist.

Following the walk-in hours on Feb. 18, Career Services also had a table set up in the Atrium of CAS where they promoted the career fairs for Feb. 23 through Feb. 24.

The Engineering, Science, and Technology Career Fair will be held on Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m in the Student Union Ballrooms. However, registration is required for the engineering career fair. On Feb. 24, there will be an Internship and Career Fair from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the SU Ballrooms.

For students who are planning on attending the career fair, bring a valid UA Zip card and take note that business attire is recommended. It’s suggested to bring multiple resumes, and research the attending employers to learn more about their company.

During the career fair, students can have their headshot photos taken in SU Room 314. They can also research employers and store coats and bags. In addition, students can learn how to market themselves at the fair during workshops held at 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 10 a.m. in SU Room 316, which is presented by the Fisher Institute for Professional Selling.

Both Creamer and Pirtz  are making themselves available in CAS room 126 every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting in March until Tuesday, May 3. They will see students as walk-ins for resume and cover letter review, mock interviews, job and internship search assistance, and additional career-related inquiries.

Students that are enrolled in the CAS may call Career Services at 330.972.7747 to schedule an individual appointment with either Pirtz or Creamer.  Students may walk-in to Career Services in the SU any weekday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. without an appointment for resume review and mock interviews.

Students are encouraged to watch for a Career Services table throughout the semester as they give away promotional items for students. There are several upcoming Career Service programs that will be held in CAS this semester such as the Etiquette Dinner and several workshops pertaining to Chemistry, Psychology, Communication, Mathematics/Statistics, Biology, Sociology, and English majors.
