Programs sending students across the world to places as far as China and South Korea were highlighted during a study abroad fair on Jan. 27.

The UA Global Destinations mini-fair took place from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. in the Student Union.

The fair presented students with information on the programs offered through UA as well as those offered through affiliated programs.

The Education Abroad Program offers many programs with destinations ranging from Denmark to South Korea. They even offer several programs during the summer, including a four week program at the University of Ulsan in South Korea with all in-country expenses paid for by the university in Ulsan. In the 2007-08 academic year, 296 students, faculty, and staff participated in programs in 27 countries.Of these students, 217 students earned academic credit while abroad.

Linda Marx, Coordinator of International Programs, said, Each year there seems to be a different program that would fit the most popular mold. Dr. David Ayers, Director of International Programs, is working with several programs to China and one to China and Korea for this summer. It is filling up pretty fast!

At the mini-fair, the Education Abroad Program provided ten reasons to study abroad from www.allabroad.us including learning a new language, exploring your heritage and gaining a new perspective on your own country.

Students that have always wanted to study abroad but were concerned about finances had the opportunity to discuss these issues at the mini-fair. Staff from the Office of Student Financial Aid were present to answer questions about financial aid. Finances for a planned trip may come from a number of sources including grants, loans and scholarships.

To students who are interested in studying abroad for part of their college career, Marx said, Just do it! Study abroad stretches minds and opens hearts. It gives the student a chance to travel, make new friends often for life, learn how a different educational system operates, perfect a second or third language although many programs are in English, and have interesting topics for conversations in job interviews and elsewhere!

For those students interested in spending part of their college careers studying or working abroad, the Office of International Programs will be having an education abroad forum and an Open Chat, a weekly opportunity to meet with an education abroad advisor and answer any questions you may have before traveling abroad.

The Education Abroad Forum will be on Feb. 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Student Union 312. The Open Chat is on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Polsky 483.
