Be on good terms with your significant other in time for Valentine’s Day with UA’s couples counseling service.

This service provides help for troubled couples as well as individual students who have any personal anxieties. According to UA’s Web site, the center provides a quiet place where enrolled students can discuss their concerns in private with an experienced professional.

All of the psychologists at the center have doctorates in psychology, and the counselors who are not finished with schooling are supervised.

Students who are uneasy about discussing their problems with a complete stranger should be aware that sessions are kept confidential. A psychologist for UA’s counseling service, Dr. Guanita Martin, said, If someone were to come and ask if a student were seen here, we would not provide that information. However, Dr. Martin specified that UA reserves the right to take action in extreme instances where it is evident that a life is at risk.

In addition to relationship issues, the Counseling Center provides psychological assistance to those who are having problems with choosing a major, learning disabilities, studying, drugs and alcohol, sexuality, family problems and self-esteem.

Students who have used the service in the past were satisfied.

We’ve done many surveys over the years and students rate us very highly, Dr. Martin said. The surveys also found that the students’ overall wellness improved and they were more likely to remain in school.

The Counseling Center is located on Butchel Ave. in Simmons Hall 306. The student-exclusive service is free, but students need to schedule a session ahead of time. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the exception of Tuesdays, closing one hour earlier.

Any student that is ready to take advantage of UA’s counseling service can call 330.972.7082 to schedule an appointment.
