On Tuesday, Oct. 25, YouTube sensation Matt Beilis performed at The University of Akron’s Student Union. The event was organized by the Residence Hall Programming Board (RHPB).

This was Beilis’ first time at UA. He started the 7:17 p.m. show with a single from his new album “Famous.”

The audience’s favorite performance was the cover of Michael Jackson’s song, “Billie Jean.” Beilis ended the show with one of his original songs, getting the audience to sing along.

Beilis’ musical career actually began after finishing college. Born in New Jersey, he studied at Columbia University and finished with a degree in Finance.

Music has always been a part of Beilis’ life. He grew up listening to his father playing guitar. Before he started singing he was actually a piano player, taking lessons from three-and-a-half till he was eighteen years old.

Singing became his true passion after graduating from Columbia University. He started putting covers on YouTube and from that point on, music has been his career.

“Music was plan B. It was a safe route and I am happy that I took that route. My family has been very supportive,” Beilis said.

Since then he has been making his own music. His voice is versatile, leaning towards a more pop rock, Ed Sheeran style. Several of his songs have been featured in commercials. He has done several EP’s and he just finished his current album, “Famous,” which is getting good views on Spotify and YouTube.

Beilis says he believes that “It is important to be who you are. There will be 17,000 ‘No’s,’ but you should not let that get into your head. At the end of the day you have to learn to pursue your own goals.”

Regarding performing at UA, Beilis said, “[it] is a beautiful campus and I would definitely want to come back and perform.”
