Ohio Brewing Co. brings originality to downtown

“Is it possible for the downtown Akron bar scene to get any better? We have a diverse array of bars and venues, many of which operate year-round. However, it does feel like there is something missing because all these places serve all the alcohol we could ever drink but none of them actually have a hand in making the frosty adult beverages most of us know and love.”

Is it possible for the downtown Akron bar scene to get any better?

We have a diverse array of bars and venues, many of which operate year-round.

However, it does feel like there is something missing because all these places serve all the alcohol we could ever drink but none of them actually have a hand in making the frosty adult beverages most of us know and love.

Luckily, for those of us who have a profound appreciation for the art of beer, the Ohio Brewing Co. has found a home in downtown Akron.

The micro-brewery and it’s vats, owned by the Ohio Brewing Co., sit in the window on the street. You may have seen them while driving down Main St.

The bar has only been open since March, but they have already started to attract people with this tantalizing aspect of owning their own micro-brewed beer.

If you head down any time of the week between 3 and 7 p.m. for their happy hour they have half price on all drinks, so a taste test of the usual 12 different brews could be relatively cheap.

They also have a full menu, so there is a chance to find the meal that goes with the tasty micro-brew.

The nightlife of Ohio Brewing Co. has not quite yet taken off, but they are starting their college I.D. night on Wednesday, where there is 25 percent off food with I.D. and $6 pitchers.

Also, Thursday is ladies night with three dollar drink specials and a D.J. who is also there Friday night.

Saturday night brings live bands to the Co., so they are in the process of beefing up the event selection on each night of the weekend.

If you’re looking for a place to watch the upcoming Ohio State game or Cleveland Browns game, they have 22 plasma high-definition televisions adorning the halls and coupled with more than a few great micro-brews it is a prime spot to take in a sporting event.

As General Manager Jeff Buynak puts it, We try to be that traditional brew pub.

It is not a small establishment by any stretch of the imagination. There is the full bar complete with many taps, an upstairs area for banquets and a few pool tables.

As the Akron drinking crowd, we deserve this kind of variety in our alcohol adventures downtown, because we cannot survive on simple brand-named beers forever.

It is a natural progression in developing a beer-lover’s pallet to want something more refined than Natural Light.

We can stand up and proudly proclaim that we have our own bar with a micro-brewery and we will no longer be slaves to the general malaise of cheap alcohol that we have come to unwillingly accept.

We, who understand and appreciate the delicate touch it takes to balance barley and hops into something that can only be described as a beautiful birth of a sudsy invigoration of taste.

It is a grand, almost epic feeling to know that our city has this now and we can shake off the dusty old traditional alcohol tendencies in favor of something that can continue to grow, renew itself and always keep us proud.

Taking account of the menu of grub along with the always ranging types of beers that the Ohio Brewing Co. can produce, it has a great potential to become a staple of the downtown Akron scene.
