November 29, 2016
The University of Akron women’s basketball team will return to the court on Wednesday when it hosts Bucknell University. The game will start unusually early, as tipoff is set for 10:30 a.m.
The Zips come in with a 2-1 record on the season after wins against Malone and Canisius and a loss to Penn State. It will be the Zips first game in ten days after the Thanksgiving Break.
Senior guard Hannah Plybon comes into the game averaging 27 points per game, which leads the Mid-American Conference by over three points per game. For her effort so far, Plybon was named MAC East Division Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. This includes Plybon’s nine made 3-pointers versus Canisius on Nov. 20.
The Zips have five other players who average at least five points per game beside Plybon, led by guard Megan Sefcik. The Zips’ first player off the bench has averaged 10.7 points per game while making nine of 21 3-pointers.
Forwards Greta Burry and Alex Ricketts come in scoring seven points per game while providing excellent rebounding. Ricketts is also grabbing seven rebounds per game while Burry hauls in nearly six. Finally, Shaunay Edmonds (six ppg) and Alli Ball (5.7 ppg) have provided scoring from the starting lineup.
The Bisons enter Wednesday’s game with a 4-2 record after defeating Drexel on Sunday, 78-66. Bucknell played the ACC’s North Carolina on Nov. 20, and looked good against a big team in a 65-50 loss.
The Bisons are led by Kaitlyn Slagus, who averages 15.5 points and ten rebounds per contest. She is also shooting 42.9 percent from beyond the 3-point line. Also, Claire DeBoer and Sune Swart are scoring 13 points per game. Kyi English is adding nine points per game.
Following the Zips game versus Bucknell they will embark on a three-game road trip, with games against Winthrop (Rock Hill, South Carolina), Youngstown State, and Eastern Kentucky.
The Zips will first look to improve to 3-1 on the season when they battle the Bucknell Bisons at James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, with the game time set for 10:30 a.
