Traditional family values is a topic that came up during one of the presidential debates. Both candidates said that gay couples should have certain rights, but said they would do nothing to change traditional family values. However, is that really within their power, or anyone elses’ for that matter?

The concept is not static and unchanging. It’s just the opposite. It flows and changes as time goes on. People like to hold onto traditions for nostalgia. It’s like those childhood Christmases at Grandma’s. It would be great if they stayed customary and consistent, but sometimes situations and circumstances change and are out of everyone’s control, turning a time-honored tradition into a memory of the past.

What was thought of as tradition has changed. It’s no longer the picture perfect image of Leave it to Beaver. The picture of traditional family values is free form and realistic.

There are blended families, broken families, single parent families and gay couple families. Their traditions and values are as different as they are. As strange and even wrong as letting gays get married may seem to some, the fact is right and wrong is relative. It varies from society to society and from person to person.

There is no universal set of morals; not even the Bible. People who are against the idea of gay marriage often turn to the Bible, saying that it states that marriage is to be between a man and a woman, and while that may be true, not everyone believes in the Bible. It’s possible for people to be gay, to believe in God and want a holy and binding union.

Years ago, interracial marriage was considered unthinkable (and in some minds it still is) but the concept isn’t as taboo as it once seemed. Times change and so do ideas. Gay people have gained some of the rights previously reserved for their traditional counterparts. Connecticut became the fourth state on Oct. 10 to make same sex marriage legal. The law will take affect this week.

So it seems that as time goes by, ideas and traditions change, giving way to new ones that at one time seemed unspeakable. At one time divorce was seen as a sin, but today it occurs every day. Values change. Like lives, they are unpredictable and constantly changing. Families can be anywhere; love exists whether it’s seen as traditional or not.

A family can be found in faithful friends, and for some, love can be found in people of the same sex. It doesn’t have to be understood, but it can’t really be stopped.

No one can change how people feel on one side aisle or the other and no one can stop the traditional family values.
