The Akron Zips Women’s basketball team will look to continue their recent winning ways as they travel to Eastern Michigan tonight to take on the Lady Eagles.
The Zips (7-16, 2-7 Mid-American Conference) have won two of their last three games, but will face a tough test as EMU comes into the game 12-9, and tied for the MAC West lead with a 6-3 record.
After winning back to back home games against Central Michigan and Northern Illinois, the Zips dropped a tough game to a good Ball State team on Saturday. One good thing did come out of the game however, was freshman guard Keyla Snowden broke UA’s single season 3-point record. It was not enough however, as the ladies found themselves down big in the second half.
I thought the team worked really hard, being down by 20 points in the second half and cutting it to five, head coach Jodi Kest said. But we struggled with our transition defense and our rebounding and it cost us today.
Defense will also be the key tonight as the Zips have shown that they have few problems scoring the ball. Without top scorer Sarah Tokodi (15.7ppg), UA seems to have new girls step up every night to take on the scoring load.
Besides her 3-point record, Snowden is putting together a fantastic rookie season. She is averaging 13.4 ppg while shooting 40 percent behind the 3-point arc and connecting on 87 percent of her free throws.
Kara Murphy, whose 13.2 scoring average is right below Snowden’s, also leads the Zips in shooting percentage (43 percent) and rebounds per game (5.3). Riana Miller has come on strong as of late and is averaging a team high 1.6 blocks per game.
As the Zips head into EMU, the team will rely on Murphy, Snowden and Miller to continue their winning trend. With the MAC tournament approaching, strong performances from the youthful team will help the Zips tune up before tournament time.
