The University Park Alliance has announced a new effort to revitalize the neighborhood around the university. Their goals include attracting new businesses and transforming the community.

When you think of really fun, attractive college towns, it’s all about the neighborhood around campus. That being said, we think this effort is great. The area around the university does lack a community feel. Other areas in Akron do have that feel, like Highland Square or the valley, and students are drawn to these areas.

Many students obviously live around campus and it is certainly convenient. Creating a unique neighborhood around the campus and attracting new businesses could make living in the area a lot more fun.

Attracting students to the area and keeping them there can also have benefits for those businesses and create a student community despite the fact that many of UA’s students are commuters.

But most important, this neighborhood would reflect us, the students of the university, with all of our unique interests and personalities. And that certainly seems worth the effort.
