Where to pig out on Fat Tuesday

“It’s Fat Tuesday – get out the grub! It’s Fat Tuesday – get out the grub! Originally (and still) observed for religious reasons to commemorate the day before Ash Wednesday and the subsequent beginning of the Lenten calendar, Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, has now become a secular holiday, most notably celebrated in the streets of New Orleans where festivities take place every year.

Because it directly precedes Lent and the strict dietary rules that come with it, Fat Tuesday also marks the only day of the year besides Thanksgiving when it is appropriate to eat like a total pig. And with all of the yummy, cheap food around Akron today, why not indulge?

Breakfast is always the perfect way to begin a day, especially if it consists of a truck load of carbs- pancakes, hash browns and muffins all on the same plate. Mostly every local diner offers these fares, but everyone knows that there is only one place for a truly hip-multiplying breakfast: McDonald’s. With one right off campus on Exchange, there is no reason why one shouldn’t haul his or her self there and inhale a couple McMuffins. For a beverage, forget usual healthy fare like orange juice and milk; one of McDonald’s creamy delicious triple thick shakes (chocolate is the best) is the perfect companion to a well-rounded, stomach shattering breakfast.

A gluttonous day is incomplete without some ice cream, and luckily there is a Dairy Queen nearby to satisfy one’s sweet-tooth. Every day they have an ice cream special and today’s is the heavenly Peanut Buster Parfait. Made up of peanuts, cold, creamy custard, and warm, oozing hot fudge, this delectable treat is only $2.65. In addition to this peanut-y delight, there is always the option of trying the Blizzard of the month, which this month is Choco Cherry Love, a luscious blend of sweet cherries, custard, and rich chocolate. If the choice is too difficult, just get both!

When dinnertime comes around, almost everyone is the mood for a good pizza. There’s nothing better than a cheesy, greasy, meat and veggie-covered pie. Well, except for a cheesy, greasy, meat-covered pie for barely anything, of course. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Pizza Bogo in the Valley offers five dollar pizzas. These aren’t just regular pepperoni and cheese pizzas though! There is the option to get one of their specialty pizzas, which include the to die for Hawaiian with pineapple and ham, and the phenomenal chicken and tomato-covered Milano. As would be expected, hordes of people wait to get their pizza, but with this great deal, who wouldn’t? Heck, with pies as cheap as that, there is no reason to not get two, or even three to save some for the next day!

There are many great options around the Akron area for a face-stuffingly good time on Fat Tuesday. But the fun doesn’t have to stop after the day ends! One can continue to marathon eat after Lent begins at the Waterloo Restaurant on Waterloo Road, where all-you-can-eat fish, along with a side of salad and bread, is offered for $7.99 every Friday, beginning this week. While there, it is also mandatory to check out their aphrodisiacal deserts, including mouth-watering pies, ginormous cream puffs, and their renowned apple dumpling.
