With finals approaching, you’d be less than prepared if you haven’t adopted some kind of study habit by now.
My favorite, of course, is listening to music and whether you’re into the calming sounds of classical or the jackhammer beats of metal, there’s a good feeling when you’re tuned to your favorite playlist while working on something stressful.
Being a self-proclaimed music savant, I feel like I know a thing or two about what’s good and one thing I’ve noticed is that everyone has their favorite genres and bands, but that doesn’t always mean you’re safe from boredom.
How many of us have overplayed our favorite John Mayer album to the point of exhaustion?
Well, not me. I don’t listen to bad music but you get my point.
So, before you’ve gridlocked your study playlists with outdated songs, I’m going to make a suggestion.
Don’t worry about hurting my feelings if you’d rather not take it-everyone likes their own music. I don’t consider myself a music snob, I just think my playlist is better than yours. Nothing wrong with that.
Anyway, my suggestion is this: try something new!
It doesn’t have to be a different genre, but if you like a specific artist, why not give a different one with a similar sound to try.
Thanks to the internet, music is so much easier to find these days. No, I’m not saying you should steal it, but at least you can find it.
I, myself, like a lot of old punk rock. When I was in a band (no, it’s not a plug so leave me alone) the kind of punk that seemed to be the most popular was that dirty, trashy style.
And does anyone remember ska? Let me give you a brief rundown, in case you’ve never been given the privilege.
Ska involved a type of punk/reggae sound, usually involving a horn section and a few years ago it exploded.
That’s right, for about a whole six flippin’ months ska was all anyone could talk about. After that, it disappeared faster than the Mayans and it was just as much of a mystery! All of a sudden, people just decided to start hating it and it was gone.
So you may be asking yourself what’s popular now? If I could make a guess, I’d say it was indie music.
Stuff like Kings of Leon and Phoenix seem to be getting the most frequent turns on the new wave stations and I’m probably not the first to admit it, but their music is catchy!
Hardcore seems to be getting a lot of attention as well, but I’m still confused about that one.
I’m definitely not against the old school type, but then there’s this new kind where people are mixing heavy, pop-punk and techno all in one!
It’s one thing if a guy wants to scream instead of sing all pretty, but then you throw a flanger on his voice. He’s not Akon!
Whatever your choice of music is, just remember one thing: It’s okay to try something else. You may find out you like it and you don’t even have to tell your friends!
Everyone has a guilty pleasure. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like Kelly Clarkson.
