A license is needed to drive a car. Interviews are conducted to jobs. Since parenting is so important, why are there no guidlines for becoming one? With the case of Nadya Suleman, it’s a good question.
Suleman, 33, gave birth to octuplets on Jan. 26. She already had six children at home. That is 14 children to one single mother.
The ages of the children range from newborns to 7 years old. With the addition of the octuplets that makes 10 of her children under the age of two.
I know now they (her older children) may or may not have really deep down wanted that many siblings, but at the time I was so focused, so fixated on wanting so many that I just keep going.
Suleman’s own mother admitted her daughter’s choice to have this many children is unconscionable to her.
Although she does give one possible motive behind the decision.
She told reporters she thinks the reason her daughter wants so many children is because she was an only child. There must be another motivating factor for wanting so many children.
Ann Curry conducted the first interview with Sulemanon on Tuesday’s Dateline.
Do you have any income at all?
At the moment, no. So how does she plan to care for the 14 children she brought into the world?
Probably just with student loans. She says she won’t go on welfare. Her plan to take out student loans she will realistically never pay back is not much better.
But she assures Curry that she is providing for her children.
I’m providing for my children, I am.
So what is her plan to care for her kids. She plans to go back to school in the fall. How? Does she know she can’t bring her 14 kids on campus with her? Who will watch these kids? How exactly is she going to study for finals and write papers when she has 14 children to care for?
While Suleman’s actions are unconscionable, it also begs the question of what the fertility doctor was thinking implanting all of her available embryos.
She went to the same doctor each time, and he was aware how many children she already had.Suleman says her doctor didn’t judge her and was very professionals. Was he?
At her age the standard is to implant two or three embryos, not the six she had left.
This woman is delusional if she really thinks she can provide for these children, and not just financially either.
Three of her older children already have disabilities, one of which has Autism. The chances that her octuplets will have medical problems, including Cerebral Palsy and other developmental delays are high.
How can she give the proper attention to children who have special needs?
The simple answer is she can’t. She can say it with a straight face in front of cameras all she wants, but it is obvious that this woman is not stable.
Having 14 children without proper means to care for them is irresponsible. Her desire to fill a void will seem less fulfilled when she realizes she is incapable of taking care of them.
