Ms. DoRight,

My dad is a really cool guy. We’ve always had a great relationship and I love spending time with him when I go home on the weekends.

I moved into a house close to campus with five other guys, and it’s my first time away from home. A few weekends ago, my dad came over to drop off a TV stand, but then he hung out.

For the whole weekend.

At first it was weird, now it’s just annoying.

I don’t want him hanging out and partying with us the whole weekend.

He’s a cool guy, I just don’t know how to tell him that he’s not one of the guys.

Thanks,

Daddy’s Boy

Daddy’s Boy,

You’re probably not the only one wondering how to make your dad leave. Even though your roommates love having someone around who can buy beer, they probably want him to leave, too.

I’ll give it to you straight: You don’t have any easy options.

If you tell him it’s uncomfortable to have him around all the time, you stand the chance of getting cut off. He could retaliate by barring you from his house, which means no more free food and laundry.

If it comes down to that, you might want to tough it out. Your roommates would have to understand your situation.

There are ways to push him away without hurting his feelings, but you have to be careful. Dads don’t act like it, but they’re very sensitive creatures. However, this is also an advantage.

Think about it; your Dad is older than you and your friends. It’s a hard realization, but he might even be getting into his autumnal years.

Because of this, you don’t want to risk missing out on quality time with the old man. But, quality time does not have to mean that your dad comes over and bongs beers with you and your friends.

If you want to do the adult thing, call your mom and tell on him.
