Protest The Hero

Backgound: This Canadian quintet can’t decide on a set genre, and that’s all part of the charm that comes along with this band’s impressive variety, which includes technical riffs, almost emo-esque singing and incredibly brackish screaming.

They have toured with Trivium, Alexisonfire, Silverstein, Avenged Sevenfold, Dragonforce, The Sword and Blessthefall, among others. Those who like Hawthorne Heights, Against Me and From First To Last may not find this band appealing. They appeal to those who can appreciate talented, catchy metal with extremely talented, well ranged screaming. Their new CD Fortress is now in stores but for the full experience get their last CD, Kezia, which features them at their best.

Where they are now: They are currently touring with Silverstein and the Devil Wears Prada, and have just been confirmed for the Vans Warped Tour this summer.

Whole Wheat Bread

Members:Aaron Abraham (guitar, lead vocals), Joseph Largen (drums, vocal), Will Frazier (bass, vocals).

Genre: Punk

Background: Formed in 2003, Whole Wheat Bread has something very interesting about them that they bring to the current American punk scene. Imagine walking into a show, the sound of rowdy, but accessibly enjoyable punk rock blasting, only to discover that the band blowing your mind is actually made up of three rappers-turned-rockers.

Former member Nick Largen and Abraham were both heavily into the Florida rap scene. Once they became friends, they discovered they had a common love for punk. Together they got Nick Largen’s brother Joseph, who joined in lieu of a career in neurosurgery, and began a venture that would change the course of their lives forever.

After being around the DIY scene for two years, Whole Wheat Bread caught the eye of Fighting Records and was given the chance to put out a record. Going through producer Darian Rundall, who previously worked with bands such as Yellowcard and Pennywise, made the album Minority Rules. The album caught on and they were immediately thrown on tours with heavyweights Reel Big Fish and MxPx, as well as The Suicide Machines and The Bouncing Souls.

Whole Wheat Bread already has a follow-up record in the works. They are working with producer Travis Huff of Fall Out Boy and with rapper Lil’ Jon on his upcoming solo album.

With all the success that Whole Wheat Bread has garnered, they can look forward to an even more successful career making them punk heavyweights themselves.

Where they are now: Currently wrapping up a tour with Authority Zero, Whole Wheat Bread will be spending the summer writing their sophomore album.

The Dillinger Escape Plan

Members: Greg Puciato (vocals), Ben Weinman (guitars), Jeff Tuttle (guitars), Liam Wilson (bass guitar), Gil Sharone (drums).

Genre: Metal/Progressive.

Background: Dillinger Escape Plan is a band from New Jersey. Their crazy, sporadic, violent shows reflect their music style. DEP is a new breed of progressive metal. They are the heavy hitters in a new genre of metal called Chaos Metal. DEP formed in ’92 but they didn’t put out a full length CD until ’99 when they released Calculating Into Infinity. The CD was so unique and different than most metal bands during that time, that Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr.Bungle, Peeping Tom) wanted to collaborate with the chaos metallers. They put out an EP together known as Irony Is a Dead Scene.

Unfortunately after this, the band underwent a slew of changes. Singer Dimitri Minakakis left the band and bassist Adam Doll also left after being paralyzed from a car accident. He came back to record some electronics and keys for Miss Machine From The Chest Down. Suffering from heavy losses, they continued and held auditions for a singer. Greg Puciato got the role almost immediately. With a new singer and bass player, they went on to record Miss Machine and toured for about three years. Eventually, their drummer decided to join Coheed and Cambria and they found a new drummer in Gil Sharone.

Finally in 2007 they released Ire Works, which became a classic hit. After the release of its hit single Black Bubble Gum, they found themselves on the Conan O’Brien show.

As copies of Ire Works continue to fly off the shelves, their army of fans grows, and they soon will ascend from the underground.
