Immersed in a sea of red, white and blue, John McCain and Sarah Palin appeared bright eyed and ready to fight late Wednesday afternoon.

The duo spoke to a crowd of about 13,000 people at Green High School. The majority of those there in support of McCain were middle aged Americans. However, the audience ranged from veterans of past wars to kids still in middle school.

Palin was the first to speak. Accompanied by her two daughters and her husband, she stated what everyone has been thinking.

This election is going to come right down to the wire, she said.

She followed by saying that Senator Barack Obama was not being candid with Americans about his tax plan. She said that the tax credit Obama is offering is not a credit it is a redistribution of wealth, the tax cut McCain is offering, which just cuts taxes for Americans.

McCain later said that according to Obama, he will cut cutting taxes for 95 percent of Americans. He asked how this figure was possible when about 40 percent of Americans don’t pay taxes.

Spreading the wealth, devalues the idea of hard work and productivity, Palin argued.

It’s going to come down to what we believe in, she said. It’s what Ronald Reagan believed in.

McCain told the audience that he needed Ohio’s vote.

We need to win Ohio, he said. With your help we are going to win Ohio.

McCain stated that he supports opportunity rather than spreading the wealth.

He spoke of bringing the troops home with honor and victory.

We need a new direction, he said, referring to the country as a whole. We have to fight for it.

He mentioned the military and how he had served, stating that he has the scars to prove his loyalty for this country. This was followed by chants of Thank you John that lasted for a minute before dying down.

There were numerous military personal in the crowd, including Specialist Aaron Cunningham, 25, of Green.

I like how he supports the military and the war effort, he said. I think he is going to do a good job.

I just wanted to show my support for, hopefully, the next President of the United States.

At one point he started a sentence with if I’m elected and quickly stopped and started again with when I’m elected.

College Repbulicans president Jason Ziegler was in attendence.

It shows that Summit county is going to turn out the votes, Ziegler said refering to what he thought of the rally.

Having 13,000 people show up to his rally is great. it shows that a lot of people are still excited about John McCain and Sarah Palin, he said.

He was not the only person affiliated with UA to show up.

He said that there were around 31 college Republicans that went along to the rally.

The alumni of the university were also out in strong force to support their candidate.

Doug Smith, UA graduate from 1982, said that this was something they wanted to do.

When asked why he felt he needed to be at the rally, Smith replied that we’re conservative type people and we’re jumping on the bandwagon.

The fact that he was going to be so close to us – we’re from over in Uniontown – we felt like it was worth a half day of vacation.

Smith’s wife and daughter were along with him for the rally. Jessi Robinson, 23 year-old from Uniontown, said she was also voting Republican.

Obama scares me, Robinson said. He has no idea what he is talking about.
