“The Charlie Brown Christmas song Christmastime is Here really captures the feeling of the upcoming holiday. The beginning lyrics of the song set a great mood for the Christmas season. The Charlie Brown Christmas song Christmastime is Here really captures the feeling of the upcoming holiday. The beginning lyrics of the song set a great mood for the Christmas season. Christmas time is here, Happiness and cheer, Fun for all, that children call, their favorite time of the year Getting into the Christmas spirit is not always easy. However, with the variety of events happening in the Akron area this season, it should be much easier to enjoy this happy holiday.
One of the events closest to The University of Akron is the winter wonderland at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens. The theme for this year’s event is Nativity. Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens transforms its beautiful grounds into a stunning backdrop of lights, trees, and nativity sets from around the world. Some of these sets come from The University of Dayton’s collection. This event will run from Nov.18 to Dec. 28, and Stan Hywet’s museum shop will be open for Christmas shopping, while the café will provide hot chocolate and other tasty treats. Keep in mind that they are closed Mondays, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Another close to campus event is the Lock 3 Live! Holiday Fest. Lock 3 Live! Is located just downtown on Main Street. This Christmas Festival is opening on Nov. 28 and running until January. The unique thing about the Lock 3 Live! Holiday Fest is that they have one of the only authentic German Christmas Markets in Ohio. This market is called Chriskindl Market. It is open until Dec. 30 and admission is free. There are many traditional German trinkets for sale, as well as some amazing German food. They are closed Monday’s and of course on Christmas. The other awesome thing about the Holiday Fest is the ice-skating. Lock 3 offers the largest seasonal skating rink in Ohio. And the best part, admission is free. zskate rentals cost $2.00 or you can bring your own. The ice-skating part of the Holiday Fest is open until late January.
The last major holiday event in Akron is the Holiday Lighting Festival at Blossom Center. Most people think of rocking out to awesome concerts at Blossom. However, in November, Blossom transforms into a Christmas light spectacular. They offer a two-mile drive, through animated displays that are holiday themed. There are over two million lights, with more than 35 major scenes, and over 300 individual displays. This would be a perfect venue for a chilly December weekend. The lighting festival runs through January 4th.
If Christmas lights, and chilly outdoor adventures aren’t the right tune this season, there are other indoor Christmas events in the area. The Akron Civic Theater is holding a Christmas Music Spectacular, and the Ballet Theater of Ohio is performing the holiday favorite The Nutcracker.
So in the words of Charlie Brown, Christmas time is here, We’ll be drawing near, Oh, that we could always see, Such spirit through the year. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
