Obama gets to work in first full week

“President Barack Obama has been the leader of the United States of America for a week now. Since his swearing in on Jan. 20, he has wasted no time digging into everything from the economy to Guantanamo Bay prison. On Thursday Jan. 22 Obama ordered that the prison be shut down within a year.”

President Barack Obama has been the leader of the United States of America for a week now. Since his swearing in on Jan. 20, he has wasted no time digging into everything from the economy to Guantanamo Bay prison.

On Thursday Jan. 22 Obama ordered that the prison be shut down within a year. Minutes after the announcement of his plan people began stressing their concerns.

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio was was quick to question the decision.

The key question is where do you put these terrorists, Boehner said as reported by CNN. Do you bring them inside our borders? Do you release them back into the battlefield?

This seems like a legitimate question.

Nothing has come close to the coverage of the proposed stimulus plan aimed to help the failing economy.

It is no surprise to anyone that our economy is struggling right now, every newspaper and news cast tells us that things are not doing well. On Monday CNN’s Anderson Cooper reported that in a single day 70,000 Americans lost their jobs.

In order to stop the bleeding, President Obama has proposed a stimulus plan.

The plan, which has received a lot of resistance from the Republican Party, is expected to bring in $825 billion in relief to the U.S. Obama’s budget director, Peter Orszag has told congressional leaders that 75 percent of the stimulus plan money will be spent within 18 months, CNN reported.

The question is will it bring the economy back to life quickly enough.

While the plan may be more complicated to understand than a calculus class there are a few points worth noting.

The $825 billion plan looks at bringing money to construction projects including education, renewable energy, health care records, science, research and technology. According to CNN, this part of the stimulus plan will cost $322 billion.

Medicaid will receive $87 billion in relief and law enforcement will get $4 billion.

This area is one that is receiving attention. Republicans are stating that this bill should be focused on job creation.

There is also an area meant to protect some from recession. Obama looks to give aid to unemployment, Cobra (which is a discounted health care system for laid-off employees) and increasing food stamps. Once again people are saying that giving some of these programs money instead of focusing on job creation is wasteful.

Tax cuts was one of the President’s main speaking points during the campaign. According to the bill, individuals will receive $500 in cuts and a married couple would draw $1,000 in cuts. There is also a tax cut for low-income workers; however a dollar amount has not been announced.

Businesses will also be getting some cuts. Small businesses will be able to increase their tax write off’s from $125,000 to $250,000.

While all of this will hopefully help the economy it has been said that there is no real quick fix to solving this economy.

We’re talking about years to turn around some really profound economic problems here, senior adviser to Obama David Axelrod told CNN’s Jim Acosta before the inauguration.

With all the talk of the economy and the plan to save it some found it interesting that President Obama held his first interview since becoming president with an Arab language station.

My job is to communicate to the American people that the Muslim world is filled with extraordinary people who want to live their lives and see their children live better lives, Obama said. My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy.

He also made note that the U.S. should listen first, saying that often times the U.S. dictated situations when they did not always know all the factors.

According to CNN, Obama has said that he will be traveling to the Muslim world within the first 100 days in his presidency. The exact location is unknown.
