The University of Akron men’s baseball team came into the Ohio University Bobcats series on a high note.
The Zips entered the series with a three-game winning streak coming off a sweep of the Northern Illinois University Huskies.
The emotional high of the NIU series was short lived and the Zips were beaten in three straight games by the Bobcats.
The Zips fell to 9-26 overall and 6-9 in the MAC while the Bobcats improved to 19-14 overall and 12-3 in the MAC.
We’re keeping our heads up, Zips’ head coach Pat Bangtson said. This is a resilient club and we just have to keep our heads and noses to the grindstone.
In the first game of the series, the Zips pitching and defense put the club on the wrong side of a 10-4 score.
The Zips defense committed two errors, which led to three unearned runs for the Bobcats.
Chris Rigo got the win for the Bobcats going six innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits and striking out five.
The Zips Tom Farmer was tagged with the loss lasting five innings and giving up seven earned runs on eight hits.
Bobcats’ left fielder Marc Krauss led the club offensively going 2-3 with a home run, two RBI and four runs scored.
Right fielder Brett Savage went 2-4 with an RBI to lead the Zips offensive attack.
Frank Turocy got the start in game two and had similar results – lasting only three innings and giving up six earned runs on eights hits in the losing effort.
The Bobcats Rex Ingham got the win going seven innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits and striking out four.
The Bobcats could not retire Zips designated hitter Jake Plata as he went 4-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Zips dropped game three to the Bobcats 9-8 in a heartbreaking 13-inning loss.
Bobcats’ center fielder Gauntlett Eldemire had the decisive blow hitting a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the 13th inning off of Zips closer Ryne Romick.
Romick was handed the loss pitching five innings and giving up two earned runs on three hits. Both earned runs given up by Romick were of the solo home run variety.
I don’t think he was in there too long, Bangtson said. Other than the two pitches that allowed the home runs, he pretty much dominated their hitters.
The Bobcats Bryce Butt got the win pitching five scoreless innings of relief, giving up six hits and striking out two.
Kyle Hallett came in to pinch run for designated hitter Jake Plata and led the Zips offensively going 3-4 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored.
Bobcats’ left fielder Marc Krauss continued his hot series going 4-6 with two home runs, two RBI and three runs scored.
One of the lone bright spots in the OU series for the Zips was the bat of Kevin Haas.
Haas went 6-14 in the series with a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored.
I felt good all weekend and was seeing the ball really well, Hass said. The Bobcats pitchers were pitching backwards all weekend – throwing their off speed pitches early in the count – and I caught onto their trends.
Haas continues to be one of the Zips most consistent hitters with a .331 batting average, six home runs, and 15 RBI.
The Zips will resume play Tuesday at Lee Jackson Field when they take on the Malone University Pioneers.
The Pioneers will come into the game with 32-10 record overall and a 19-5 record in the AMC.
Zips’ left-handed pitcher Scott Foster will get the start for the Zips against the Pioneers.
Foster has pitched in 11 games this season making three starts and going 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA.
He’s been consistent for us all year long, Haas said. We have all the confidence in the world in him and we expect him to go deep into the game.
First pitch for Tuesday’s game against MU is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start time.
