The Center of Career Management (CCM) is helping UA students young and old find jobs and prepare for their futures in a tight economy. The organization which assists in putting together two career fairs a year is recently focusing on ways for students to improve their resumes and cover letters. On Sept. 17, a lecture will be held by the CCM titled Resumes and Cover Letters: Will Yours get the Interview? and will take place in room 308 of the Student Union from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Freshman interested in finding ways to pick their major are also welcome to attend. On Sept. 22, from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Student Union in room 308, the CCM will host the discussion What Can Help Me Choose A Major?
On the CCM Web site, which is www.uakron.edu/ccm, students can find a variety of tools for improving their chances of success in their careers. The site shows how students can meet with advisors, participate in a resume review service and get assistance with the Career Advantage Network (CAN). CAN helps students gain relevant work experience through cooperative education and internship experiences.
Freshmen are encouraged to take advantage of the CCM as early as possible. Assistant Director Michael Morley said, We work with students of all levels. For some we help them choose a major, and others with their resumes. Morley also explain how they offer what is referred to as ZipWay, which helps students become well rounded candidates [for employment]. ZipWay is a guide for students from any school level, from freshmen to graduating seniors. The process takes students through four different phases, starting with self-discovery. Next, is exploration or the narrowing down of your career options. Then, experience which is the determination of yours skills and interests and whether or not they fit your career choice. Finally, there is the transition phase where students learn to successfully find jobs and move smoothly into their careers.
The CCM also helps UA alumni as well. Morley said, Our alumni numbers have doubled since the beginning of this year. Alumni along with current UA students have access to Perfect Interview at the CCM Web site. Perfect Interview is a tool that can be used to practice your interviewing skills. Alumni can also visit with advisors and attend events such as career fairs.
ZIProfessional is another tool afforded online by the CCM. ZIProfessional is a web-based database which allows students the ability to post their resumes, apply for jobs and search for employers.
The CCM goal is to educate students while providing networking opportunities for their employers and the campus community, according to their Web site. It also says their mission is to support students and alumni career success through engagement in self-discovery, experiential learning and life-long career development in an ever-changing and diverse global society.
