It’s that time of the year again. Christmas music is all over the radio, Black Friday kicked off the shop ’til you drop madness and the holiday decorations are everywhere. One of the many great traditions that is a part of the holiday season, is the movies. The 25 days of Christmas bit has started on ABC family, and I’m more than certain that the Hallmark channel has been playing Christmas movies back to back. Over the years, there has been movie after movie based on this oh so popular holiday, but with rushing around buying presents and visiting with friends and family, which ones are the ones to waste your free-time watching?
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
This traditional Dr. Seuss story was a classic Christmas tale in both cartoon and human form. Everyone knows that the Grinch steals and un-steals Christmas, and ends up turning into a good guy in the end, but who doesn’t love a happy ending to the Christmas story everyone knows?
Fred Claus
A newbie to the Christmas movie scene, it was recently released on DVD, so I rented it, and I loved it. Fred Claus is basically Elf II, minus the elf and with a little more Grinch added. Fred (Vince Vaghn), brother to Santa, is a sleaze-ball that works for a repo company. He decides to turn over a new leaf and ends up saving Christmas, the North Pole and also strengthens his relationship with mother and brother Santa. Hilarious movie with a cute, and typical ending.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Everyone with a good sense of humor can appreciate any National Lampoon’s movie. This movie, starring Chevy Chase, includes many embarassing moments due to his hillbilly in-laws. It’s the perfect storm of hilarious holiday mishaps.
Elf
There is nothing about Elf that doesn’t make me smile. Its quirky, comical character Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell) makes both children and grown adults laugh up a storm. Buddy goes on an adventure to New York City to find his real father, who works for a children’s book company. In the end, Buddy finds love, his dad and a way to bring the Christmas spirit back to the world.
The Christmas Story
Whether you like it or not, you’ve probably seen The Christmas Story once or twenty times, during a single Christmas season. The TBS marathon has been well-known for overplaying this movie the week before and the day of Christmas. It’s a tradition that has been going on for as long as I can remember, and Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without this movie, which is why it had to be the number one pick. From the triple dog dare of sticking your tongue to a metal poll in the winter to Ralphie thinking he shot his eye out with his Red Ryder B. B. Gun, there is not much you can’t love about The Christmas Story.
