This weekend started off on a bad note with a loss to the University of Toledo (7-5-2) and a win on Sunday against Bowling Green State University (4-9-2) for the Zips (4-6-2).
Friday the Zips took on The University of Toledo Rockets (3-2-1 in the MAC) who are currently sixth in the conference and lost 1-0.
We played really well, created some great chances early and did not finish them, and like always it comes back to hurt us, Zips head coach Chris Pfau said. It’s very frustrating to get the looks we are getting and not put them away.
Scoring for the Rockets was Sarah Blake. Leading the Rockets with seven shots was Molly Cornwell. Rachel Kravitz had two shots on the game.
Rachel Phillip led the Zips with three shots and two shots on goals. Britni Back and Katie Wise had two shots a piece.
Goaltending for the Zips was Jeny Wolbert who played all 90 minutes and had four saves and only let one goal go by.
Jeny Wolbert has really stepped up her game, Pfau said. The last couple of games she has really taken over. Our backs and our team defense is looking very good and has come a long way since last season.
On Sunday the Zips took on the Bowling Green State University Falcons who are currently ranked last in conference play (0-4-2 in the MAC) took home the victory 2-1.
This game was not so much about the win, but about the season, Pfau said. This was a game we had to win, this was a game after a tough loss on Friday night and was about character, about our senior class becoming leaders, this was about giving up a penalty with less than five minutes to play and not wanting to lose – believing we were going to win.
Scoring for the Falcons was Colleen Kordan. Leading the Falcons in shots was Katie Stephenson with five.
Alicia Almond, Colleen Kordan and Alyssa Zuccaro had two shots a piece for the Falcons.
Leading the offensive attack for the Zips was Rachel Phillip who had three shots, two shots on goal, one goal and one assist on the game.
Leading the Zips in shots was Ashley Hughes with four. Leigh Cullen, Britini Back and Rachel Phillip had three shots a piece.
The other Zips goal was scored by Liz Cloutier.
Goaltender Jeny Wolbert played all ninety minutes and recorded five saves for the game.
If we can continue to play the way we did today and have that type of belief and determination it could be a fun ride the last five games, Pfau said.
The next game will be at home Friday against the Miami University Redhawks (7-5-1/3-2-1 in MAC play).
The Zips will stay home on Sunday to take on Ball State University Cardinals (4-9-0/2-4-0 in the MAC).
