University of Akron Division of Student Affairs is giving gifts to about 372 elementary school children this holiday season at a local elementary school.
The division adopted Leggett Elementary School this year for their Winter Giving Event.
Student Affairs will be giving each student at the school an age-appropriate book and a sweatshirt. Written on the sweatshirt is UA and Leggett Rock and it features Zippy and the Leggett Tiger.
Leggett Elementary and the principal, Mrs. Vincente, had been helping Student Affairs with safety initiatives south of campus. Through working with the school, Student Affairs learned more about Leggett.
We developed a relationship with their principal – Mrs. Vincente. She has been wonderful. Our relationship with her has helped us learn more about the school and the needs the school has, Stacey Moore, executive assistant to the vice-president for Student Affairs said.
Legget Elementary has a student population of approximately 372 that are preschool through fifth grade. The student population in general is very impoverished and many of the families have low income.
We chose Leggett because they are a local school. Right in the University of Akron neighborhood, University Park. They are right in our front yard, so this is also about really helping to connect the university and the neighborhoods that surround it to increase engagement, connection and generally good feelings, Moore said.
Over 13 departments came together to help out and adopt Leggett for its Winter Giving Event. Each of the departments is contributing financially for the sweatshirts and books. In addition to the Division of Student Affairs, Subway and Barnes and Noble have also sponsored the giving event.
Students can donate their unused dining dollars to help with the giving event at Leggett. Students can donate using their Zip Card at Rob’s Café at breakfast, lunch and dinner through Dec. 3.
On Dec. 7, the Division of Student Affairs will have a holiday party for the students at Leggett elementary school. The students will be getting their gifts at the party.
In the past, the Division of Student Affairs has done a variety of things for their Winter Giving Event. Last year, the division worked to collect items for a variety of local charities like the Haven of Rest and the Victim’s Assistance Center.
In addition to the Division of Student Affairs, other departments on campus are being generous during this holiday season.
During this week through Dec. 4, the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office is collecting canned fruits and vegetables. The food items will be donated to the Haven of Rest.
