Women's basketball has up and down break

“The Akron Zips women’s basketball team is currently 10-8 for the season and is coming together as a team. The Zips started winter break on a two game winning streak defeating Lake Erie College 75-63 on Dec. 14 and Chicago State 62-55 on Dec. 19. Niagara was the start of the Zips four game losing streak that extended from Dec.”

The Akron Zips women’s basketball team is currently 10-8 for the season and is coming together as a team.

The Zips started winter break on a two game winning streak defeating Lake Erie College 75-63 on Dec. 14 and Chicago State 62-55 on Dec. 19.

Niagara was the start of the Zips four game losing streak that extended from Dec. 20, to Jan. 6. The Zips lost to Niagara 60-71 on Dec. 20.

The Temple Owls was the next team to defeat the Zips 43-55 on Dec. 28.

The start of 2010 was not good for the Zips as they lost on Jan. 2 to Leigh 57-59.

The Zips started conference play on Jan. 6 losing to Bowling Green 62-74.

Since their four game losing streak, the Zips have been on a three game winning streak defeating MAC opponents Buffalo, Kent State, and Miami.

For the first win in 2010 and the first win in conference play The Zips defeated Buffalo on Jan. 9

Small forward Kara Murphy led the offensive attack for the Zips as she put in 21 points.

Power forward Jolene Tamboue led the Zips in the defensive attack with 11 rebounds and one block.

Last Wednesday the Zips defeated MAC rival the Kent State Golden Flashes 62-55.

Zips head coach Jodi Kest said, Looking at Kent State’s stats on paper was kind of like looking at yourself in the mirror, we knew that it was going to come down to who is able to execute and make plays at the end of the game and tonight we were able to do that.

Four Zips went into double digits in points against the Golden Flashes last Wednesday night.

Point guard Ayla Guzzardo used her quickness as an advantage against the Golden Flashes as she put in 14 points. Center Kyle Baumgartner’s strong post play added another 12 points for the Zips.

Leading the offensive attack for the Zips was once again Kara Murphy putting in 16 points.

Double-doubles are rare in college basketball; to get one by halftime is almost unheard of. That was not the case for Jolene Tamboue. By halftime she had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tamboue would end the game with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The Zips defeated the Miami RedHawks on Jan. 16 55-40.

Two Zips went into double digits against the RedHawks as small forward Kara Murphy and power forward Rachel Tecca both put in 13 points.

The Zips took on the Ohio University Bobcats Jan 20 and lost 64-63.
