Dr. Michael Dyson, a sociologist from Georgetown University, doesn’t think that America is post-racial.
Neither does Barack Obama.
Neither do we.
Dyson spoke Monday night at E.J. Thomas Hall, kicking off the university’s Rethinking Race week. This week brings an important discussion to our campus. It’s one that needs to continue long after this week ends and far from our campus, too.
Ever-changing racial dynamics in our country are something that need to be talked about. Americans of all colors need to continue to work together with compassion and understanding to create what Martin Luther King, Jr. called the beloved community.
Surely, denying that there are still problems will get in the way of this. Though believing that our country is post-racial may be hopeful and optimistic, it’s not realistic.
The election of Barack Obama, the nation’s first black President, is surely a sign that we are going in the right direction.
But it’s a milestone, a marker, and certainly not the finish line.
