The University of Akron found their way into the Super Bowl, even though it was through a commercial.
The ad which ran eight times on game day, including once in the second half, cost the university $42,000 plus an estimated $60,000 in production costs.
Lori Meek, advertising manager for UA, said that the total amount of the ad could not be calculated because they also shot recruitment material during the same time. The total for recruitment material and the Super Bowl ad production totaled $60,000.
The funding of the commercials and recruitment materials comes from the marketing and communication departments budget, all of which are paid through public funds.
What we are trying to do is be very intentional and focused, Barbara O’Malley, associate vice president for communications told the Akron Beacon Journal. We try to do things that are going to reach the most people in the most positive fashion.
This is the 12th year in a row that the university has run a regional commercial during the Super Bowl.
