Zips Storm past Lake Erie, 9-1

“The University of Akron baseball team got the job done on Tuesday afternoon with a crushing 9-1 defeat against the Lake Erie College Storm. Brandon White started the second inning for the Zips with a double. Centerfielder Nick Solitario’s double scored White, which gave the Zips a 1-0 lead.

The Zips had a big fifth inning. Haas drove in Solitario with single and Drew Turocy hit a three-run home run that put the Zips up 5-0.

I got a pitch off the hit and I was trying to put it out in the outfield in a gap and luckily I got a good enough hit to put it over the fence, Turocy said.

The Zips bats would come up big in the seventh inning. Haas hit a solo home run to put the Zips up 6-0. Later in the inning White smacked a three-run homerun, which gave UA a 9-0 cushion.

We talked to our hitters that the second or third time through the lineup that we needed to make adjustments, Bangtson said. Their guys were doing a good job of keeping us off speed and off balance in the first couple of innings.

Lake Erie’s Nick Lovick hit a solo homerun in the final inning to end the scoring.

Akron starter Zach Yike pitched five no-hit innings and struck out six batters to notch the win.

This is what we exactly needed in mid-week games, Bangtson said. Zach came out and threw strikes, he pounded the zone, and we were really proud of Zach outing.

Turocy and Brian Kordal each knocked in three runs.

The Storm’s Michael Backes was credited with loss giving up 10 hits and nine runs through 6.2 innings.

The Zips will play home again this weekend on Friday April 2nd at 3 p.m against the number one ranked MAC West Leader the 13-8 Toledo Rockets in a three game set.
