Today, you may see some people barefoot around campus. No, they are not going sans shoes because it is warmer and it is simply too hot for shoes. Well, some of them might be, but most are probably participating in One Day Without Shoes organized by the footwear company Tom’s Shoes.
The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the millions of people in the world who have to go without shoes everyday.
One might think it doesn’t matter, this isn’t going to help anything.
But one would be wrong.
We might think that our lives are pretty tough with so much to accomplish.
But let’s face it. No matter how much you have to worry about, our lives are pretty cushy.
When was the last time you had to worry about where your next meal is coming from? Not deciding whether you are going to Taco Bell or to Subway for lunch, but really worrying about when you will be eating again?
Most of us take for granted the little things we have such as running water, roofs over our heads and basic necessities such as food and shoes.
The fact is little things, no matter how small, can make a difference. Even if that difference is waking people up from the cushy little bubbles that they live in and showing them things like this exist.
Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean that it isn’t there, and no matter how long you close your eyes and wish they will still be there.
One could always do more than nothing to help those less fortunate, whether that act is serving at a soup kitchen, joining the Peace Corps or a simple act of awareness by taking off your shoes.
If you still don’t think it will help then purchase a pair of shoes from Tom’s Shoes. For every pair purchased they will donate a pair to somone who needs them.
So go footloose, kick off your (Sunday) shoes. Help raise awareness for a cause and maybe, if you can, do a little more.
