After a 10-6 start to the season, The University of Akron’s softball team has dropped three of its last five games.

The Zips have gotten off to and up and down start. They have traveled to Louisiana, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida over the last month and a half.

The team kicked off their season on Feb. 11 with a 5-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana in the Southeast Louisiana Lion Classic in Hammond, La.

Catcher Alex Feltes went 2-for-4 for the Zips and Alex Riedeman gave six strong innings on the mound, only giving up one run.

The Zips went on to drop their next game, an 11-4 loss to St. Louis, but squeaked out a pair of wins over Jackson State and Southern to move to 3-1 on the season.

A 4-5 loss to Nicholls wrapped up the Zips’ stay in Louisiana, fishing the weekend with a 3-2 record.

Akron then traveled to Charleston, S.C. on Feb. 18 for the College of Charleston Cougar Classic.

After kicking off the Classic with a 3-1 loss to Towson, Akron picked up three straight victories over College of Charleston, East Tennessee State and Canisius.

The Zips fell in their final game in South Carolina with a 4-6 loss to Morehead State, wrapping up the weekend with a 6-4 overall record.

Akron traveled to Woodstock, Ga. on March 4, losing their first two games of the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic, moving to 6-6 on the season.

The remaining three games in Georgia were cancelled due to weather.

The Zips picked up four straight wins in Orlando, Fla., but dropped two of their next four in the Sunshine State.

A loss to Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. was followed by three straight cancellations, leaving the Zips at the 12-9 mark on the season.

Leading the Zips offensively has been a pair of Alex’s (Feltes and Helfrich) and the powerful Olivia Hegedus.

While Feltes and Helfrich are hitting above the .400 mark, Hegedus has hit six home runs, totaling 18 RBI’s.

Sarah Earley (.404 avg.) and Heather Bauer (.302 avg., 2 HR’s) have also been big for the Zips in the batter’s box.

Bauer also leads Akron on the mound, compiling a 5-4 record on the season with a 2.05 earned run average.

The road trips down south have concluded for the team, and Akron will play their home opener on April 1 against Miami (Ohio). The game is part of a double header starting a 1 p.m.

The Zips will welcome a string of MAC opponents to Lee R. Jackson Field from April 1-5.
