The University of Akron men’s baseball team busted out the brooms at Lee Jackson Field this weekend with a sweep of the Northern Illinois University Huskies.
The Zips improved their record to 9-23 overall and 6-6 in the MAC while the Huskies fell to 11-21 overall and 4-7 in the MAC.
The Zips offense was out in full force in game one scoring 14 runs on 17 hits beating the Huskies 14-10
The Huskies Chuck Lukanen got the loss lasting only an inning and two thirds allowing eight earned runs on eight hits.
Zips senior captain Tom Farmer got the win going six and a third innings, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits.
It was a rough game for me, Farmer said. I didn’t have my best stuff but the offense picked me up and that’s what makes a good ball club.
Farmer’s three strikeouts moved him into sixth place on the Zips’ all-time career strikeout list with 219.
It feels good. It was a bonus because we won the game, Farmer said. I’m very honored and it’s nice to be mentioned with those guys.
The Zips offense was led by right fielder and senior captain Brett Savage, who went 2-5 with 4 RBI.
I just tried to hit the ball where it was pitched and with runners on base I was able to hit the ball hard and drive them in, Savage said.
Center fielder Matt Roberts and designated hitter Jake Plata each had three hits to add to the offensive surge.
The Zips offense picked up where it left off in game two.
UA scored 14 runs for the second consecutive day and beat the Huskies 14-11.
Andrew Brown came in from the bullpen and got the win for the Zips going four innings, giving up three earned runs on two hits and striking out four.
Chris Bassitt recorded his second save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
The Huskies Zach Oates got the loss going three innings and giving up three earned runs.
The Zips offense tattooed the Huskies starting pitcher Dave Reynolds scoring 11 runs on 12 hits in his four innings of work.
Zips left fielder Brandon White led the charge going 4-5 with a homerun, three RBI and two runs.
Shortstop Kevin Haas hit his fifth homerun of the season to go along with a double, a single and two RBI as the Zips offense continued to roll.
The Zips scored double digits in runs for the third straight game as they completed the sweep of the Huskies Sunday winning 10-9.
The Huskies Kyle Glancy was saddled with the loss only lasting two and two thirds innings, giving up nine earned runs on nine hits.
After a rough first two innings, the Zips starting pitcher Benjamin Danziger got into a groove allowing just two earned runs over the next six and a third innings.
After the first two innings I knew I had to keep it where it was and give my team a chance to win, Danziger said. They started hitting the ball at people and we started getting outs.
Danziger’s eight and a third inning outing was his longest of the season.
It feels good anytime you can go out there and give your team a chance to win, Danziger said. I didn’t know if I could go that deep after the start but I started getting outs and I felt good.
Ryne Romick came into the game in the ninth to get his third save of the season allowing one hit and striking out one.
Zips center fielder Matt Roberts led the offense with three hits in five trips including a solo homerun.
The Zips scored in bunches on Sunday plating three runs in the first inning and six runs in the third inning on their way to the sweep.
Senior captain Brett Savage said that the sweep was an important in-conference series win for the ball club.
It puts us at 6-6 in the MAC and keeps us in the hunt, Savage said. We haven’t had a sweep in a while so it was a good confidence booster for us.
The Zips will be on the road Tuesday to take on the 10-19 Cleveland State University Vikings. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start time.
