The Akron Zips softball team dropped four games over the weekend to Miami (OH) and to Ball State in a pair of doubleheaders, losing to Miami (Ohio) 4-0 and 5-0, and falling to Ball State 7-4 and 11-0.

The Zips (13-22-1, 0-8 MAC) traveled to Oxford on Friday to take on the Miami RedHawks (23-12, 6-2 MAC).

In game one, Miami scored runs in the first four innings, while the Zips were held to only one hit in that span. In the top of the fifth, the Zips were in position to score with the bases loaded with two outs, but the inning ended on a strikeout of Brittany Mauer.

Mauer (11-17) was credited with the loss from the circle. While only giving up one earned run, the Zips committed three errors in the outing. The Zips’ woes at the plate seemed to come up again while only producing four hits in the game.

In game two, the RedHawks plated two runs in the second inning to make the score 2-0. They would go on to add runs in the third and fourth innings going up 5-0. The Zips produced only four hits and did not have a runner advance past second base the entire game.

Kinsi Tellep (1-2) was credited with the loss from the circle, giving up 10 hits and five runs to go along with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Zips then traveled to Muncie, Ind., to take on the Ball State Cardinals (24-11, 4-2 MAC) on Saturday and Sunday.

In game one on Saturday, the Zips grabbed the lead first by scoring a run in the top of the second.  Amanda Ricker pinch ran for Allison Dorr and was brought in on a sacrifice fly by Rachael Ratcliffe.

Ball State then took the lead in the bottom of the second with a four-run inning on three hits and three walks.

In the top of the fifth, the Zips closed the gap with a home run by Ratcliffe, her sixth of the year, to make the score 4-2.

Ball State would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-2.

UA would not go away quietly. In the top of the seventh, Ratcliffe led off the inning with a double. Iesha Mountain, pinch running for Ratcliffe, scored on a double by Taryn Allmon. Allmon would come around to score off a single hit by Crystal Hernandez to make the mark 7-4 with no outs.

The Zips’ rally ended with two runners stranded on base to end the inning.

Mauer was credited with the loss. After giving up four runs, she was pulled after 1.2 innings.

On Sunday, the Zips took the field again against the Cardinals and fell 11-0 after five innings.

The Zips struggled at the plate in this game, only recording one hit, an infield single by Mauer.

Mauer was also credited with the loss from the circle, allowing eight runs (six earned) on four hits. She was pulled after 2.1 innings of work.

The Cardinals went up early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the third, the Zips had a scoring opportunity with the bases loaded. Kellie Roudabush was hit by a pitch, Alissa Birkhimer reached first on a throwing error and Ratcliffe also reached after hit by a pitch. Dorr struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Cardinals extend their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the third by plating five runs off three hits and with the help of two UA errors. They would post four more runs in the bottom of the fourth and put the Zips down in order in the top of the fifth to end the game.

UA will travel to Loretto, Pa., to take on St. Francis (14-18) on Tuesday in a doubleheader. The Zips will return to MAC play next weekend when they travel to Athens, Ohio, to face off against the Bobcats.
