The University of Akron Rifle team will be sending an athlete to Fort Worth, Texas for the NCAA Rifle Championships March 13.

Freshman Jenna Compton was selected to compete in the NCAA championships after scoring a 587 at the NCAA qualifier in Columbus, a score that ranked in the top 15 nationally.

Compton is the first UA shooter to compete in the NCAA championships since Mark Beres was selected in 1979. Head Coach Newt Engle said Compton has been shooting very well, and expects that she will continue to in the NCAA Championships.

She’s been doing great, and she has even improved her score since the qualifier, Engle said.

According to Engle, focus is the key to success.

The most important shot you have to shoot is the one you’re about to, Engle said.

According to Compton, she is looking forward to competing against the best shooters in the nation.

On Feb. 28, Compton aided in the defense of the team’s Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference (WIRC) Championship in West Lafayette, Ind. According to Compton, the WIRC Championship means just as much as finishing first in the NCAA Championships.

At the WIRCs, our whole team shot very well, at the qualifier, I shot very well, she said. Being for our team, the WIRC title would rate the same as being in first at the NCAAs.

In order for her to leave Texas with a victory, Compton said she needs to execute each shot each shot to her full capabilities.

I need to keep my thoughts positive, concentrate on myself, and take it one shot at a time, she said. According to Engle, because Compton is already standing out as a freshman, he cannot see a limit to her potential.

I expect her to continue doing good, and probably better than she has been doing, in the NCAAs, but, I don’t see the NCAA Championships as the pinnacle of her success. Engle said.

The NCAA Rifle Championships take place March 13 through March 14 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.
