Tech-metal revolutionaries the Dillinger Escape Plan made their third LP Ire Works available in its entirety on the band’s Myspace page Nov. 11.
The album, available in stores Nov. 15, is another example of why Dillinger has set itself apart from a watered-down Hardcore / Metal scene.
Ire Works is a fresh take on the band’s Math-metal approach that has made it infamous in the underground scene since its self-titled first release in 1997.
Tracks like Fix Your Face, and 82588 are spastic and unpredictable, characteristic of the intensity, rage and speed that Dillinger has brought to the table on every release.
Though it would seem like its style of playing as fast as it possibly can, in impossible time signatures would seem like a dead-end road, Dillinger has revolutionized its sound once again on Ire Works.
Sick on Sunday and When Acting as a Particle, are tracks that show Dillinger in a different light.
The band creates intensity through vocal-less tracks, aside from the last minute of Sick on Sunday, letting the instruments do the talking.
Where most bands use instrumental tracks to create mood and atmosphere, Dillinger seems to be on the edge of self-destruction.
Vocalist Greg Puciato uses a combination of screaming, singing and bursts of yelling to accompany the innovative guitar work of Ben Weinman.
Throughout the album, Dillinger never lets its stranglehold of the listener loosen. Even during singing parts, Puciato is able to create angst and a sense of loss of self-control.
In Milk Lizard, Puciato sings It feels like never-ending, in a tone that epitomizes the journey of Dillinger throughout its career.
As he sings, the feeling that the world could crash down on your head at any minute is apparent.
And that has been exactly the way every Dillinger live show and record has come across.
No band has been able to capture the apparent loss of sanity during live performances or on record like Dillinger and the band is able to channel its onstage energy into its fourth release on Relapse Records.
Many fans believed the loss of legendary drummer Chris Pennie would hinder the band, but new drummer Gil Sharone proves he is worthy of taking over the drum throne and performing the blast beats and off-time signatures for which Pennie was known.
Ire Works may only be seen as the next installment to many music fans, but in reality, it captures the true essence of what music should be: an original, innovative record that overflows with emotion, intensity and an obvious love for the art.
Rating: 5/5.
