Akron golf places sixth
October 10, 2013
The University of Akron finished in sixth place at the Firestone Invitational tournament this week.
The Zips hosted 17 teams over the event that took place on Monday and Tuesday. Though the Zips held the 11th position in the early stages of round two, they were able to turn up their game and secure the quality finish.
Akron golfer Carr Vernon finished second overall in the tournament. Vernon, who is a sophomore, finished his three-round tournament at four-under-par. It took an incredible three-hole stretch from Eastern Michigan golfer Stuart Grehan to knock Vernon off the leader’s spot. Grehan finished his tournament by shooting an eagle, par and birdie to secure his win.
Eastern Michigan was the only MAC team that was able to edge the Zips. The Eagles finished in third place at +11, five shots better than the Akron Zips.
Chandler Bull had another strong performance on the course this week. He finished one-under-par which was good enough to land him a tie for the sixth position. He has been solid for the Zips throughout his UA career and he came through again.
Akron’s Ryan Harris finished even and claimed a tie for eighth.
The Zips golf team will travel to Kennesaw, Ga. in two weeks to compete in the Pinetree Intercollegiate. Akron will compete throughout the year until the Mid-American Conference tournament takes place early May.
