University of Akron shortstop Kevin Haas is the first player to be named to the Academic All-MAC team since 2005. The only problem; No one informed him of the accomplishment.
When he was told that he was the ninth player to grab this honor and the first since 2005 he had no idea.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and on the field. Students can qualify once they have a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of their sports contests.
Haas admitted his secret to his 3.5 cumulative grade point average, bringing his books and work with him on road trips.
Manage time he did, the 6-foot sophomore posted a .347 average, scored 52 runs and gathered 21 multi-hit games.
Now looking back I can take the time to appreciate it and what I did, Haas said. During it, it was just so fast that I just kept going with it and it was just fun at the time.
That hitting streak helped boost his average up to lead the team including all three seniors Doug McNulty, Kurt Davidson and Vince Chiera.
I looked up to all three of them and learned a lot from them, Haas said. They told all of us actually, just keep it going and even though we’re gone, we’re still going to be watching.
