This weekend the women’s basketball team (2-4) defeated Rider and lost to Tulsa in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament in Fort Myers.

The Zips won big against the Rider Broncs (1-5) 79-43 on opening day of the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament this past Friday.

Leading the offensive attack for the Zips was center sophomore Kyle Baumgartner with 20 points. Baumgartner also had five rebounds in the game.

Kyle came ready to play today, Zips head coach Jodi Kest said. If we can get Kyle to play that way every game, it’s going to be a great year for us.

Coming off the bench was freshman power forward Rachel Tecca putting in 16 points of her own, while junior small forward and team captain Kara Murphy put in 14 points.

Recording their first collegiate points of their college career was freshman shooting guard Taylor Ruper and freshman power forward Ti’eshia Stubbs. Ruper had two three pointers in the game while Stubbs had one point on a free throw.

Defensively for the Zips senior power forward Jolene Tamboue recorded eight rebounds to lead the team and sophomore center Denver McLean and freshman shooting guard Taylor Ruper recorded a block.

The Zips defensively kept Rider shooting only 27 percent (15-56) and had a season high 13 steals in the game.

Defensively, I thought our kids played hard, Kest said. I think the effort was there, forcing 26 (Rider) turnovers.

The Zips shot 46 percent scoring 28-61, 10-23 from behind the arc, had 47 rebounds, 21 assists and 13 steals for the game.

Leading the offensive attack for the Broncs was Amanda Sepulveda with 17 points. Leading the defensive attack for the Broncs was Caitlin Bopp with 10 rebounds.

The Broncs were 15-56 from the court, 4-18 from behind the Arc, 24 rebounds, seven assists and six steals for the game.

The Zips played again on Saturday and lost to the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (3-1) 70-64.

I give our kids a lot of credit, Kest said, We were down and went with our full-court press which gave them a little bit of trouble. We played hard and I’m just disappointed that we didn’t win the game. But the effort was there.

Small forward Kara Murphy led the offensive attack for the Zips with 21 points. Murphy also led the Zips in rebounds with eight and assists with four.

Power forward Jolene Tamboue recorded 10 points. Small Forward Jasmine Mushington put in seven points of her own. Shooting guard Amber Witt had five points for the game.

Point Guard Ayla Guzzardo put in eight points of her own and led the Zips in blocks with three.

With seven rebounds a piece was center Kyle Baumgartner and small forward Jasmine Mushington.

The Zips only made 31 percent of their shots (18-59), 6-21 from behind the arc, 48 rebounds, 13 assists and seven steals on the game.

Leading the offensive attack for Tulsa was Taleya Mayberry with 14 points. Leading the defensive attack was Tiffani Couisnard with six rebounds.

Tulsa was 26-54 from the court, 5-11 from behind the arc, 31 rebounds, 18 assists and 10 steals for the game.

The Zips will be home this Wednesday as they take on IPFW. Tip off will be at 7:00 p.m. The Zips will be home Saturday and play Youngstown State at 2:00 p.m.
