The university has stepped down from its controversial policy that gave them the authority to require DNA samples from job applicants.
We’re glad that the university has responded to the concerns and widespread criticism that followed after the policy came to light in the last few weeks.
Many people criticized the policy as it is seen to violate a federal law that goes into effect Nov. 21.
That being said, there isn’t much else the university could do in regards to the possible DNA testing. Their explanation for the requirement revolved around the fact that criminal records and background information may be increasingly linked to DNA in the future.
But it hasn’t happened yet, and the policy was correctly hailed by many as inappropriate.
The move comes after a faculty senate meeting last Thursday, in which the members of the senate unanimously approved a resolution calling for the administration to rescind the policy.
What we ask for now is that the board be more thorough before enacting such controversial policies, and make sure they are warranted before placing them in the books.
