The women’s basketball team defeated Central Michigan on Saturday for their first win in Central Michigan since Feb. 6, 2001. The game came down to the wire due to the Chippewas being unable to convert on several chances to tie the game by taking low percentage shots and turning the ball over.

The Zips also took chances to give the Chippewas the game including two failed inbound balls with 1.9 seconds left to go. However, the Zips finished the game on top with a score of 74-72, taking their season record to 15-3, 5-2.

During the game, the Zips recorded 13 three pointers which tied a school record, ironically set against the Chippewas on Feb. 21, 2005. Individually, Sophomore Hannah Plybon led all scorers with 21 points while Sina King, Lauren Hung, and Anita Brown added 19, 12, and 11 points, respectively. Freshman Kerri McMahan added a game high six assists in the win.

The Zips return to action on Wednesday when they take on the East first place team, the Bobcats of Ohio University at 7:00 p.m. The Bobcats (15-3, 6-1) are a team that has won two MAC Championships and made two appearances in the NCAA tournament. They will be entering the game on a five game winning streak, and have only lost one conference game this season. OU is powered by Kiyanna Black, who leads the team with an average of 15.4 points a game, while Quiera Lampkins controls the boards with 6.8 rebounds per game.

Akron will need a strong showing from their starting five in order to quiet the crowd and snatch a victory from the Bobcats on their home floor in Athens.
