April 23, 2015
The Mid-American Conference award has been awarded to Claudia Garcia Jou and Clayton Murphy with MAC Women’s and Men’s track and field honors.
Garcia Jou earned this honor after having two spectacular performances where she claimed the women’s high jump. At the Cal State Los Angeles Twilight Open held on Thursday, April 16, Garcia Jou cleared a jump of 1.79 meters. Her second title came a few days later, Saturday, April 18, during the Mt. Sac Relays when she claimed the title with a 1.85 meter jump.
Murphy, like Garcia Jou, earned this week’s honor with a pair of victories. During the Mt. Sac Relays, Murphy won the 1,500 meters with the second best time in school history at 3:43.08. He then went back to the track a day later on Saturday, April 18 to run the 800 meters at 1:47.98, which is the 17th fastest time in the nation.
Overall, the Akron Men’s and Women’s track and field team has earned weekly honors 20 times during the season, Garcia Jou earned her sixth weekly honor and Murphy has been honored four times.
Gracia Jou, Murphy and the rest of the Akron track and field team will return back to action as the team divides for three competitions this weekend at the Ashland Alumni Open, the Drake Relays and the Hillsdale Relays. The team will be heading back to Akron, May 8 and 9 to host the Campbell/Wright Invitational held at Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.
