Rifle

The University of Akron’s No. 16 rifle team struggled this past weekend while competing in the Palmyra Invitational. The Zips would manage to score 4,585 points but it was enough against opponents like No. 11 Army and No. 14 Navy who compiled 4,627 and 4,596 points respectively.

In the smallbore competition, the Zips fought hard but only two teammates were able to crack the 570 mark. Tim Hopkins led the Akron shooters with a 574, while Zachary Strohl posted a 570. Rebecca Green (559) and Marlee Reynolds (558) set new personal bests to try and help the team.

Julia Hatch was Akron’s top performer in the air rifle event with a scoe of 585. Strohl finished close behind with a 584.

The Zips are off until their next match on Sunday February 14, against No. 18 Morehead State University. The match is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m in Morehead, Kentucky.

Tennis

The University of Akron tennis team, fresh off of a trio of victories last weekend will travel to Dayton, Ohio to face Wright State University on Friday. On Sunday morning, the Zips (3-0) will they play host to West Virginia University at 10 a.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.

Last weekend the Zips enjoyed a healthy dose of home court advantage by defeating Niagara, 6-1, and IUPUI, 7-0, on Friday. Akron then followed up that with a 5-2 win against Youngstown State.

Men’s and Women’s Track and Field

This weekend both teams are preparing for the 12th Annual Akron Invitational to be held at the Stile Athletics Field House on Friday and Saturday.

The latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I National Team Computer Rankings were released on Monday, Feb. 1, and the women’s team moved up to 19th spot in the rankings.

The Zips remain as the top-rated Mid-American Conference team ranked in the women’s national polls.

In the Great Lakes Region, both teams remain strong as the men’s team checks in at No. 3 and the women’s team at No. 7.
