Women’s Volleyball-
The University of Akron women’s volleyball team beat rival Kent State on Friday, 3-2. The match was a close affair, as the Zips won by sets of 25-27, 25-21, 31-33, 25-21, and 15-8.
The Zips improved their record to 7-16 overall and 2-9 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Golden Flashes fell to 12-12 and 5-6 in the conference. After losing their first nine conference games, the Zips picked up back-to-back wins over Central Michigan and Kent State.
On Saturday, the Zips fell to the Ohio Bobcats, 3-1. After winning the first set 25-18, Akron was dominated from there on out. The Bobcats improved upon their excellent season, going to 9-3 in the MAC.
The Zips have four matches remaining this season, each road matches against conference opponents. It begins Thursday at 7 p.m. at Buffalo. The Zips last faced the Bulls when they fell on Sept. 29 at home, 3-2.
Women’s Soccer-
The UA women’s soccer team fell to Buffalo on Thursday, 1-0, to finish its season. The Zips finished with a 4-11-4 record, while going just 1-6-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls improved to 7-7-5 and 4-4-3 in the conference.
Senior goalkeeper Annabelle Hegeman played her final regular season game for the Zips, and she played very well. Hegeman made 11 saves on the 12 shots she faced, keeping Akron in the game.
However, the Zips could do nothing offensively, firing off just three shots on the night. Two of those were on target and stopped by Buffalo goalkeeper Laura Dougall.
Buffalo got its goal from Celina Carrero, her second of the season. The goal came just nine minutes into the game off an assist from Adrianna Vancuyck.
The game brought an end to the careers of Hegeman, Caitlin Jakubek, Madison Kaser, Abby Gindlesberger, Hannah Werth, Sarah Sivic, and Karin Norman.
