Last week, he told Larry King that he welcomed the support of … President George W. Bush.

Wh-wh-what?

In fact, he said he would be proud to have the president campaign on his behalf, that he would appreciate it.

McCain appears to have no fear of the looming possibility – or, probability, at this point – that Bush’s endorsement might lead voters to cast their ballots for his opponent.

One would think that the anti-Bush vote at this stage of the game would scare off a candidate. After all, Bush’s approval rating last month was 32 percent, an all-time low.

Yet, McCain does not seem to fear any anti-Bush sentiment.

The Bush family supports the McCain campaign. There has been talk of McCain choosing a presidential sibling as his running mate. And, let’s not forget: McCain is one of the biggest supporters of the Iraq War.

Of course, McCain has also taken to invoking the name of the Republican holy one, Ronald Reagan. I think conservatives bow their heads when they hear his name.

A video posted on his Web site sums up why McCain feels bulletproof. The narration uses charged language like courage, leadership and heroism. But, more important, it recounts McCain’s experience as a prisoner of war. You can’t buy that kind of emotion.

He was fished out of the water after his plane was shot down. He had two broken arms. After being bayoneted several times, a North Vietnamese soldier smashed his shoulder with a rifle butt.

He was then transported to the Hanoi Hilton. He spent several years in isolation.

There is no denying this is powerful stuff. In fact, it’s hard to harbor bad feelings against the guy as it plays. Plus, he looks quite fetching in uniform back in the ’60s. He could be a recruitment poster boy.

Once the video is over and you’re able to shake the patriotic imagery and semantics, you can get to the meat of McCain’s campaign.

Part of his platform is the plan to send more troops to Iraq. He claims if efforts in Iraq do not retain the support of the American people, the war will be lost as soundly as if our forces were defeated in battle.

That’s priceless. So if Americans do not support the war, we will lose.

You simply can’t call McCain on this kind of propaganda. After all, he was in a tiger cage for five years. Yeah, he’s crazy all right. Like a fox.
