The new town homes however have remained empty since their opening in November.
University of Akron offered full-time staff $10,000 towards their mortgage if they bought a Spicer Village town home.
According to Ken Stapleton, Senior Economic Dev Advisor, said that the $10,000 is an incentive for full time staff to move to the area. One could consider it a soft grant of sorts because for staff to receive this they must stay in the place of residence for five years.
This offer is not only limited to only the Spicer Village town homes, as Stapleton said. Full-time staff can receive the $10,000 for any new construction housing in the University Park area.
He also said that no staff had taken the university up on the offer citing the economy as a potential reason for this. Also, town house living may appeal to a small portion of the market place.
Currently there is no offer to help part-time staff or students to afford to live in the University Park area.
The town homes offer two floor plans; the Erie has 1,259 square feet and the Cuyahoga has 1,364 square feet. Spicer Village offers a two bedroom town home from $174,000 and the three bedroom for $339,000.
