Nothing too fancy this week, just a few odds and ends to recap.
UA vs. KSU
I wish I would have spent the first 35 minutes of this game doing something else, but the end was so dramatic that I forgot how bored I was before it.
Of all people, Jeremiah Wood hits a three-pointer to tie the game. It’s almost fitting, though. No one else on the team could make a shot beyond the arc, so the Zips had to rely on their big man to bail them out.
In the end, it didn’t matter. If your team can’t rebound a basketball or stop complaining after every foul was called, it won’t win the game.
I hope, for the seniors on the men’s basketball team, the Zips can pull together enough magic to meet the Flashes in the Mid-American Conference Championship on Saturday.
The best part about the game, though, was seeing LeBron James sitting courtside. More important, wearing his Yankee hat.
If any local media outlets actually cared about the MAC enough to cover it – to the point where people might pay attention to it – I’d love to hear all the Cleveland fans ripping LeBron again for his hat.
It’s like they say: You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone. I have a feeling that sentiment will be floating around this area in the near future, and that’s sad.
Arena Football League
I’ve been working for the Cleveland Gladiators this semester, covering the games for their Web site, and I must say, I’m impressed with the Arena Football League.
I was shocked to find out the league has been around for 22 years. Not only that, but the games don’t disappoint. The high-scoring nature of the eight-on-eight game, played on a 50-yard field, helps with its appeal.
What’s also nice about the AFL is that the players know their place. They realize the NFL is most likely out of reach and aren’t full of themselves. They’re more appreciative of what they have – and that’s something I can support.
Besides, what’s not to like about football in March?
AM Radio
For all the AM talk radio people on campus who love ESPN 850 WKNR, your heart is in the right place.
I got the chance to sit down and have breakfast with drive-time personality Mark Munch Bishop on Sunday morning before the Gladiators game, and let me tell you, it was humbling.
The only criticism I ever had for the man was that he was far too happy all the time and it didn’t always seem genuine.
I was gravely mistaken.
Munch was the most humble and down to earth guy I have ever met in my life. He took time out of his day to talk sports with me, then gave me his card and said to call him if he could ever help with anything.
Think about all of the people you have looked up to in your life, famous or semi-famous. Now think about how many of them actually gave you the time of day, offered their help and were genuinely happy to be talking to you.
My guess is, not many.
But Munch was-and he’s got a fan for life.
