Winters in Northeast Ohio means brutally cold weather and snow by the feet. Although many people are tempted to stay at home there is an alternative to having fun in the winter, ski resorts.
For the students at the University of Akron, Brandywine and Boston Mills ski resorts are the closest, and with college ID night every Friday, and it’s a bargain at only $20 per lift ticket. Midnight Madness, which occurs every Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., offers $25 lift tickets, which is ideal when you’re on a college student salary.
Boston Mills offers a variety of hills for riders of all skills. They even offer a hill with moguls for riders looking to perfect their skills.
Brandywine, only 5 minutes away from Boston Mills, offers the same quality of hills but instead of moguls they have a terrain park.
The terrain park offers a variety of rails and jumps for skiing and snowboarding thrill seekers.
Skiing and snowboarding can be a lot of work, but there is risk of injury. To avoid this risk many people decide to take advantage of Brandywine’s Polar Blast, a snow tubing attraction that is great for the non-skier/snowboarder.
Polar Blast is great for the whole family, and with a conveyor belt that goes all the way up the hill people don’t even have to walk.
If you’re a regular at Boston Mills and Brandywine and need some variety, try Alpine Valley, Big Creek Ski Area, Mad River Mountain, or Snow Trails, all located in Ohio.
For those looking to expand their skills in racing, Brandywine offers racing lessons and they set up racecourse on some of their trails.
Brandywine is also holding a how to race clinic on Jan. 17th.
If you feel the need to prove yourself as a rider, you can go up against others on Jan. 17th and 18th at Brandywine for the Nordica Rail Jam.
So next time it snows and you think there is nothing to do, just remember all the fun you can have in the snow at your local ski resorts.
