Well-made, trendy clothing is always important for anyone who wants to look good. Clothing that also represents a person’s pride and spirit is important as well. At Rubber City Clothing any Akron lover can find just that.

It’s the best way to wear pride on your sleeve, Sarah Gorring, general manager of Rubber City clothing said.

The shop first opened in 2004 creating a plethora of fun and witty shirts. They have a wide variety of original designs that focus on Akron spirit and pride in its history.

Every shirt has the Rubber City Clothing logo on the back just below the collar. Sizes range from small to 3X and include witty designs such as, Akron where the Weak are killed and Eaten’ and Think Rubber. They have sports themed shirts including Akron Witnessed First. They also carry purely representative apparel including 330 area code shirts and Route 8 T-shirts.

There are shirts representing Akron native Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders as well as shirts focusing on the familiar blimp shape that has covered Akron for many years. They also sell other clothing apparel with their designs including hoodies, hats and children’s apparel. They even have baby prints for little ones to show their Akron pride.

Rubber City Clothing has a sister shop called Made in Akron. This shop focuses on other goods made in the city as well as Rubber City Clothing. Some of these unique goods include local art, food and novelties from many points of Akron’s history.

About a third of the store is dedicated to the local art scene, Elizabeth Tyran, general manager of Made in Akron said.

There is pasta sauce from DeVitis, merchandise from Stan Hywet Hall, and even old fashion reproductions of tire shaped ash trays made from Goodyear rubber.

Any kind of product you would think of ‘made in Akron’ we’ve got here, Tyran said.

They carry Rubber City Clothing and other local clothing companies as well. One of the shirts made by the company is a Shabron jersey shirt which combines LeBron James and Shaq’s numbers to equal 56. They have sauces made by downtown restaurant Crave and peanuts from the Peanut Shoppe by the Akron Civic Theatre. Rubber City Clothing and Made in Akron provide an outlet for many different localities.

You’re not only giving us money, you’re helping the local economy in general because we carry a lot of artists and merchandise from other local businesses, Gorring says.

Rubber City Clothing is located on 18 N. High St. downtown and Made in Akron is located at 16 S. Highland Ave. near Highland Square.
