Mastodons on The University of Akron's campus

September 29, 2011
The University of Akron is home to many hidden treasures that students may or may not be aware of. The Geology Department, located in Crouse Hall, is home to a mastodon skeleton found nearly 45 years ago in Fairlawn, Ohio. The specimen was originally found during a construction project and was first analyzed by University of Akron geologists Jim Teeter and Paul Wingard. The geologists would end up spending several months with students uncovering as much of the animal as they could find, which is now still on display at the University.
