University students bowl for scholarships

Written by: Emily Beckwith

Last Sunday, the Eddie Elias Scholarship Bowling Tournament took place, in which $7,000 in scholarships were awarded to students.

The tournament, which took place in the Student Union Gameroom, was started three years ago by Peggy Elias, in memory of her late husband. It has been quite the success ever since.

“This is a wonderful way to honor my husband,” she said. “When I learned the opportunity was there to create this, I just had to do it.”

The top scorers in both men and women’s bowling each received a $1,000 scholarship. The top winners were Matt Blake and Monica Metts.

Last year a women’s division was added, which doubled the scholarship money distributed. This year, the tournament was structured into four flights — two for men and two for women — to have a chance to give out more scholarships, and to give those who aren’t regular tournament players a chance to win.

Matt Blake has been bowling in tournaments since the age of nine and plans to use the money to help pay for school.

Monica, who also plans on using the money to help pay for school, has been bowling for four years.

“My first year, I bowled a 300 game, and I’ve been hooked ever since,” she said.

Elias is proud to be able to provide this opportunity for students.

“The kids here energize me,” she said. “They’re all so determined and so grateful for this opportunity. Everyone is just so kind.”
