It may come as a surprise to our readers, but Zippy is a female.
One of only two female college mascots in the country and the face of Akron sports, many students are confused about her gender.
She’s not a guy. We’re proud of that, and it’s just one more thing that sets Akron apart from other universities.
We’re a bit confused about the difference between Zippy and the Roo, but that’s OK. Apparently it’s not OK for Zippy and the Roo to be the same person, because the Roo is too scary.
That’s not appropriate, since she’s a girl, and so we’ve actually got two kangaroos hopping around campus.
That doesn’t change the fact that Zippy’s a girl, but where did this Roo come from?
Meant to be a symbol of Akron, the Roo, who has been around for a few years, has come into the spotlight this year.
RooTown. We’re not the University of Akron anymore, we’re the Roo’s town. What happened to Zippy?
What hidden power struggle happened behind the scenes that left this mysterious Roo in power?
Is it a struggle between good and evil – Zippy and the Roo?
We dont’ know much about the Roo, but we know Zippy. She’s at the games, hugging students and dancing around.
The Roo, however, has been confined to T-shirts and large banners. Typical. The Roo has remained unseen, a mystery.
In all seriousness, we think it’s great that Zippy is a woman.
We think the university should make that known, diffusing the confusion that surrounds our mascot.
If our students don’t know she’s a female, what differences does it make?
Wait, what difference does it make anyway?
Is our mascot’s gender really that important?
Of course it is.
Zippy is the most unique college mascot in the country, and she’s winning the Capital One Mascot Bowl.
That’s important.
Maybe you should Fear Zippy instead of the Roo after all.
