Honoring Our Vets

The University of Akron Army Reserve Officer Training Corp honored our nation’s veterans with a

full 24 hours of ceremony including an eternal flame that was lit Nov. 10 and kept burning through the

On Veterans Day, a variety of guests including veterans, junior ROTC cadets from the Army, Navy,

and Marines from the local area arrived to honor and celebrate the day. The social hour began at 8

a.m. with a complimentary breakfast, and the ceremony itself began inside the Martin Center at 9 a.m.,

where the guests sat down at tables to listen to the indoor guest speaker, Retired General Hill. After the

presentations inside, everyone present moved outside to the flag poles to celebrate our nation’s veterans

with our outdoor guest speakers, Congress Woman Betty Sutton and Mr. John Winkler. Each of the

military branches laid weaths to honor all veterans who have served our country, and the ceremony

Planning the event began at the start of fall semester and was not easy. Cadets Chelsea Phillips and

Jackie Lallo organized the event by inviting the guests and speakers, coordinating with the University

facilities needed to execute the event, budgeting their cost, maintaining control of their supplies, and

assigning a 24 hour guard shift to protect the eternal flame that began at 11 a.m. on Nov. 10 and ended

Veterans Day, which was celebrated after World War I, which formally ended during the 11th hour

of the 11th day of the 11th month. The day was announced in November 1919 by President Woodrow
