The University of Akron’s cross country team competed in the Mid-American Conference Championship over the weekend as the women finished second and the men finished fifth.
The women just missed out on first place as they finished with an average time of 18:07.2, just three tenths of a second behind Ohio University who finished with an average time of 18:06.9. The Zips also finished with a team score of 58, just two behind the Bobcats who finished with a team score of 56.
Cassie Schenk, Sediah Erskine, Larisa Arcip and Kim Lorentz were named to the All-MAC team for their efforts at the MAC championship.
We raced well, but Ohio raced better, head cross country coach Scott Jones said. We’re disappointed. We recognize that Ohio deserved to be champions, and we’re going to move forward from this and work hard so we’re not in this position in the future.
The women will return nine runners next year. I think the future is bright, Jones said.
The men finished fifth at the MAC championship. They also finished just behind Ohio University, who placed fourth.
Jason Headman and Andy Morgan were named to the All-MAC team for the men.
It was the best finish historically for the men at the MAC championship, Jones said. I thought we had tremendous finishes from our top three runners.
Jason Headman, a two-time first team All-MAC runner, finished sixth overall. Andy Morgan finished eleventh and Craig Rupe 21st for the Zips.
The men will be losing four runners, including Headman and Rupe.
The men are headed in the right direction, Jones said. We need to fill the holes with our younger runners through development and newcomers.
